I totally agree. I'm loving some Emo/Metal bands lately, and now I'm about to order my first black, pyramid studded bracelet and choker!! Also considering a streak of color in my hair. Last season it was a pair of "motorcycle" type boots and light washed denims. I also think that the influence of music on fashion has no age barriers: I'm 49. A very interesting blog. Thanks :o)

A good dose of musical style

I was hanging out with some college friends this weekend and one of the guys pointed out that lots of people dress like their favorite bands. This particular guy is a Bruce Springsteen devotee who, sure enough, loves his denim jacket and v-neck white t-shirts. We made the rounds of the room, and my college buddy's point was pretty spot on.
This got me thinking about how music influences style. I'm not just talking about a tuxedo night at the opera as opposed to ripped-knee Levi 501s at a punk show - but just generally how influential the clothes on any Beatles album cover are. I know someone who once bought a white suit just because it looked like John Lennon's on the cover of Abbey Road.
Seems to me that music and style are pretty tightly bonded, although probably nowhere more tightly than hip-hop. Throw on a Mets ball cap and a pair of acid-wash jeans with Adidas trainers and you've got the style of the Beastie Boys. Inspiration from Kanye West will run up your clothing bill a lot more, but you'll get that signature look.
David Bowie circa Ziggy Stardust though - that'd be a lot harder.
