Is a smart phone a fashion accessory?

Fashion is often taken to be a statement of class and wealth. While this isn't true - and shouldn't ever be - I notice more and more people equipped with smartphones as though they were the latest in statement-making wardrobe accoutrements.
It wasn't long ago that the smartphone was a business tool - the sort of things that corporate suits whipped out of inner pockets on long elevator rides. But now they're ubiquitous. They don't necessarily go with pin-stripes and white collars any more - or at least not any better than they go with a trucker cap and pair of skinny jeans with a tear at the knee.
While I can't come up with a good reason to update from my last-generation cell phone, I do occasionally find myself jealous of those iPhone-equipped people on the street. Although I don't tweet or instagram, it'd be a handy tool. And honestly, I feel like it'd go just as well with my beat up pair of Halyards by Sperry as Italian leather Oxfords.
