Making the umbrella stylish

We tend to forget about it until we need it, but the umbrella is a must-have for anyone who doesn't live in a desert. Up and down the East Coast, we're used to afternoon monsoons and week-long rain marathons, especially during summer. So how do you make this accessory-turned-necessity into a stylish accoutrement to your work or casual attire?
Well, it's not as easy for guys. Women can get away with a lot of random patterns and extra-bright colors, but men walking around with highlighter yellow cat-print umbrellas may stay dry but not fashionably relevant. So some rules for guys would go like this.
Rule number one - no paisley. Rule number two - black is always the safest option. Rule number three - navy blue is a close second, but if you want to experiment, plaid is always great.
As for umbrella styles? That's your prerogative. If a hooked handle is in keeping with your three-piece suit and watch chain then go for it. Most of us are going to find the compact portable variety much more useful though. I myself have one with a daring tartan design I couldn't be prouder of. Makes me wish for a rainy day.
