My first 5K, my 50th pair of running shoes

I've been jogging almost all my life. It's in my blood practically, since both my parents raced professionally. But while I've maintained my steady pace and had my share of runners' highs, I've never enlisted in an actual road race. Until last weekend.
So now I have a 5K coming up, and while I'm sure my 21-minute average won't do too much to embarrass me, I've been concerned about the ratty old running shoes I've worn down to almost nothing. As I do to solve most of my dilemmas, I ran (well, drove actually) over to Rack Room Shoes and - after strenuous thought - settled on a fresh pair of Flex Optimal by Reebok. Although the neon green treads and sleek black designs don't hurt, these shoes just feel like clouds under my feet.
I'll be breaking them in with a few runs over the next several days, but I'm already feeling good about the race. While I might not place high in my age group, I'll definitely get a race t-shirt out of it. And, hey, I can always use more t-shirts.
