Brand of the three stripes, adidas was founded in 1949 by German shoemaker, Adolf Dassler, who passed away in 1978. Back in 1924, Adolf and his older brother, Rudolf had a shoe making factory in Germany in their mother’s house that specialized in spiked footwear for athletic events. The brothers gained fame when they convinced Jesse Owens to wear a pair of Dassler spike shoes in his gold medal win at the 1936 Olympics. Then, at age 49, Adolf decided to restart his career – he and Rudolf got into a terrible fight and parted ways. Adolf developed, adidas, as a sports shoe brand. The name is derived from his nickname, “Adi” (for Adolf) and “Das” (for Dassler). adidas shoes became less heavy and largely without spikes over time and developed into a brand with a focus on canvas, synthetic and rubber shoes. His brother Rudolf Dassler went on to create the brand, PUMA—a direct competitor. Today, adidas is the largest athletic wear company in Europe and the second-largest athletic wear company in the world, after Nike.
